„Watch us die.“ Must see: „The March“ by David Wheatley, UK 1990

Der MarschJust discovered this visionary movie from 1990. A five-year drought has brought people in North-East Africa to starvation, leaving them with the choice of death or Europe. When Irish EU Commissioner for International Development, „Clare Fitzgerald“ (Juliet Stevenson) meets their leader „Isa el-Mahdi“ (Malick Bowens), he tells her that it takes 50 dollars a year to keep one of them alive. „I have heard that you in Europe spend 200 dollars to feed your cats. Let us come to your homes and be your cats. It will be cheaper.“ His message is as simple as it is powerful:

We are poor because you are rich.

As they march across Libyia and Algeria to Morocco, their numbers grow to a quarter of a million. Meanwhile, the Commissioner does all she can to find solutions: letting a limited number of them into Europe as a steam valve, a Marshall Plan for Africa. But the walls of ‚Fortress Europe‘ are already in place in the heads of European politicians. At the same time the Afroamerican US presidential candidate „Marcus Brown“ (Joseph Mydell) tries to radicalise the marchers and stages them on TV to utilize them for his campaign.

At the end of the movie, the marchers set accross the Strait of Gibraltar in hundreds of small boats, landing on a tourist beach in Spain where they are met by armed military. 25 years later, El-Mahdi’s words are more powerful than ever:

We believe that when you see us before you, you will not let us die. That is why we come to Europe. If you will not help us, there is nothing more we can do. We will die, and you will watch us die, and may God have mercy on us all.

When „The March“ was first shown on German television in May 1990, it was followed by a discussion in which the movie was critized for being too pessimistic. Even though the news immediately before the sceening had reported on yet another boat with 300 African refugees arriving in Italy that day. „TPB AFK“ – Simon Klose’s documentary about The Pirate Bay out now

Now, the film can be watched and bought at its official site and torrented at — where else — The Pirate Bay.

There I am watching Tarkovsky’s Stalker again, the first time in years. Next day arrives an e-mail from Eva and Franco Mattes aka 0100101110101101.ORG, announcing Plan C, a journey to Chernobyl by six artists who barely knew each other, but have in common an obsession for Tarkovsky’s 1979 movie. Feels like someone forgot to throw a nut, and now space and time are collapsing. „Toto, I have a feeling we’re not in Kansas any more…“

Remix: „Double Rainbow“ by Hungrybear9562

Another mind-blowing story from the world of collective creativity.

On 4 July 2010, a new Internet video went viral. Hungrybear9562 was most literally blown away by a double rainbow he saw on 8 January 2010. So were YouTubers when the video hit, by both the rainbow he had recorded and by his ecstatic commentry. The video got 3,1 million hits in 8 days. It inspired dozens of re-enactments and re-mixes, and it crossed the threshold to mainstream media. Here’s the original:

Criatividade sempre constrói sobre o que foi criado antes, o que é contemporâneo em nosso meio cultural do conhecimento, a cultura pop do nosso tempo, sobre os bens coletivos de nossas línguas, se escriturais, musical, visual ou performativa. Isto é evidente no contexto da cultura tradicional Africano, e é evidente nas culturas da Internet.

Entre estes dois encontra-se um período de cerca de 200 anos, durante o qual o conceito de „criatividade individual“ foi estabelecido eo coletivo foi negado. Um novo „sujeito criador“ constituiu-se no culto do gênio, imaginando uma criação ex nihilo, desconectado do coletivo, totalmente enraizada nesse „indivíduo.“ Esta figura discursiva acompanha o surgimento deste indivíduo criativo como um agente económico, um ator individual em um mercado que se tornou cada vez mais industrializado. Este, por sua vez deu origem ao „autor“ como uma figura jurídica, o que – em conjunto com aqueles que falaram em seu nome – exigiu o controle econômico e moral total sobre os artefatos culturais que ela criou. O criador individual, que constitui-se contra o coletivo, afirma a partir do mesmo coletivo o direito de excluir outros da posibilidade de construir no topo das suas criações – até 70 anos após sua morte.

Olhando para trás a partir da revolução digital, reconhecemos esta reconfiguração complexa do nosso tecido cultural, a revolução da cultura industrial que começou com a imprensa de Gutenberg, e culminou nas „fábricas de sonhos“ do século 20, como uma parêntese. O pêndulo volta do individual para coletiva. Estamos entrando numa nova fase – na prática, na economia e na lei da cultura.

Nesta palestra quero falar sobre a abundância e escassez. E eu quero lhes mostrar alguns mídia.

Im Europäischen Jahr der Kreativität und Innovation legt Arbeit 2.0 zum ersten Mal eine umfassende Darstellung der Arbeitsproblematik in der Kultur- und Kreativwirtschaft im Digitalzeitalter vor. Den Kern der Untersuchung bilden die Portraits von fünf Schlüsselbranchen: die drei Branchen mit dem größten Marktvolumen: Film, Musik und Games, die neben dem Buchmarkt älteste Branche: Presse, sowie die jüngste: die kreative Internetwirtschaft. Dabei wird die Spezifik der jeweiligen Brache ebenso herausgestellt wie ihre Gemeinsamkeiten. Die urheberrechtlichen Regelungen im Zusammenspiel mit anderen Rechtsgebieten, vor allem dem Vertragsrecht, sind von wesentlicher Bedeutung für alle fünf untersuchten Branchen. Sie werden daher in eigenen Texten behandelt. Auch hier werden verbreitete Vorstellungen und die Intentionen des Gesetzgebers bei den jüngsten Novellierungen an der Urheberrechtswirklichkeit überprüft – mit ernüchternden Ergebnissen.

Das diesem Bericht zugrundeliegende Vorhaben wurde mit Mitteln des Bundesministeriums für Bildung und Forschung unter dem Förderkennzeichen 16|1570 gefördert. Die Verantwortung für den Inhalt dieser Veröffentlichung liegt bei den Autoren.
